My question is about low weight and a thin body. I am in my twenties, and my body looks very thin for my age. My height is good, but because my weight is low in proportion to it, I look even leaner.
People around me, friends and sometimes even relatives make jokes about this. Their remarks hurt me, and my confidence about my appearance goes down. This thought comes to mind even while dressing or having photos taken.
I do not want to gain weight quickly or by any means. I want my body to become filled out in a healthy, strong way, not just to gain fat. I see advertisements for weight-gain powders and medicines in the market, but I do not know whether they are safe.
I need guidance on this:
– Which Ayurvedic medicines or remedies are useful for gaining weight?
– What should I add to and change in my daily diet?
– What can be done to improve appetite and digestion?
– Which exercise or yoga is beneficial?
– If weight is not increasing at all, should some cause in the body be checked, and which tests?
– Is it right to take weight-gain powders from the market?
I want a lasting improvement, slowly and patiently. With your guidance I will be able to start trying in the right direction, and my confidence will also return.
Hello
Have a Healthy Day !!
Welcome to the world of health from Ayurveda conducted by Dr. Nikul Patel.
Direct answer: A thin body is mostly due to heredity, fast digestion and metabolism, too little or irregular food, and sometimes a hidden cause. First a simple check-up, then enough nourishing food, muscle-building exercise and Ayurvedic Brimhana care help healthy weight increase gradually.
Understanding the problem
In tall, thin young men, naturally low weight is common. But thyroid problems, diabetes, worms, digestive trouble or stress can also prevent weight gain, so a check-up once is necessary.
The Ayurvedic view
In Ayurveda, excessive thinness is called Karshya. With increased Vata, too little or dry food, late nights, worry and overexertion, the Rasa and Mamsa dhatus (nutrient fluid and muscle tissue) do not get enough nourishment. Treatment mainly involves improving Agni (digestive fire) and Brimhana, that is, nourishing the body to fill it out. The Charaka Samhita says that extreme thinness is also a condition worth correcting.
Practical steps
- CBC, thyroid, sugar and stool tests, on a doctor’s advice.
- 3 meals a day and 2-3 nourishing snacks in between; do not skip meals.
- Exercise with weights 3-4 days a week; when muscle increases, weight increases healthily.
- 7-8 hours of sleep; avoid staying up late.
- If jokes hurt you, do not take them to heart; keep the mind steady with meditation and pranayama.
Diet
- Milk, ghee in moderation, paneer, bananas, dates, figs, almonds, peanuts, sesame.
- Dal, moong, chickpeas, rice, wheat, potatoes, sweet potatoes.
- Avoid junk food and cold drinks; they increase fat and indigestion, not health.
Medicine and Panchakarma
In Ayurveda, Brimhana substances such as Ashwagandha, Shatavari and Vidarikand, and Deepana medicines that improve appetite, are considered useful. Regular Abhyanga (oil massage) calms Vata. The right medicine, dose and timing will be decided by the vaidya after examining your condition. Advertised weight-gain powders or pills sometimes contain hidden steroids; avoid them.
When to see a doctor?
- Weight keeps falling despite eating
- Excessive thirst, frequent urination, fast heartbeat
- Frequent diarrhoea, abdominal pain
- Constant sadness or loss of appetite
Related Questions
Is being tall and thin a disease?
Mostly not; but if weight does not increase despite eating, get tested.
Why is exercise necessary for gaining weight?
Exercise builds muscle, so weight increases healthily rather than as fat.
Does Ashwagandha increase weight?
In Ayurveda it is considered Brimhana and Balya (strengthening); take it on a vaidya’s advice.
In short: Low weight in thin young men can be due to heredity, fast metabolism or a hidden problem. A check-up, nourishing food 5-6 times a day, exercise with weights, sleep and Brimhana care on a vaidya’s advice help gain healthy weight.
