Weak Bones, a Crack in the Ribs After a Fall: What Should I Do?

Share with:

My bones are very weak. Some time ago I had an ordinary fall and got cracks in the rib bones on both sides. The doctor has advised rest and given pain medicine.

A crack from an ordinary fall makes me worry that my bones may be even weaker. What remedies does Ayurveda have so the crack joins quickly and the bones become strong? What should I eat? Which tests should I get done?

Hello

Have a Healthy Day !!

Welcome to the world of health from Ayurveda conducted by Dr. Nikul Patel.

Direct answer: If a rib cracks from an ordinary fall, the possibility of low bone density (osteoporosis) needs to be checked. A rib crack usually heals with rest in a few weeks. Nourishing food, vitamin D, light exercise and Ayurvedic Asthi (bone) nourishing care are useful.

Understanding the problem

Age, menopause, deficiency of vitamin D or calcium, thyroid problems, some medicines (such as long-term steroids), smoking and low weight weaken bones.

The Ayurvedic view

In Ayurveda, bone is called Asthi Dhatu, and it has a special relationship with Vata. When Vata rises, Asthi Kshaya (wearing of bones) occurs. Asthi Dhatu is nourished from Meda, so overall digestion (Agni) and nutrition must be good. In Bhagna (bone injury), Ayurveda suggests rest, nourishment and medicines that support joining.

Practical steps

  • Bone density test (DEXA), vitamin D, calcium and thyroid, on a doctor’s advice.
  • While the crack heals, do not lift heavy weights; but keep taking deep breaths.
  • 15-20 minutes of morning sunlight daily.
  • Good lighting at home and protection from slippery floors to avoid falls.
  • After healing, walking and light exercise.

Diet

  • Milk, curd (in the daytime), paneer, sesame, ragi, green leafy vegetables, almonds.
  • Dal and legumes (protein).
  • Avoid cold drinks, excess tea and coffee, excess salt, smoking and alcohol.

Medicine

In Ayurveda, herbs such as Hadsankal (Asthishrinkhala), Laksha, Arjuna and Ashwagandha are considered useful for bone joining and strength. The right medicine, dose and duration will be decided by the Vaidya after examining your condition. Continue them along with the doctor’s medicine.

When to see a doctor immediately?

  • Breathlessness, increasing chest pain
  • Blood when coughing, fever
  • Pain increasing over time instead of decreasing
  • Bones breaking repeatedly from minor injuries

Related Questions

How long does a rib crack take to heal?

Usually a few weeks; the time varies with age and health.

What is a bone density test?

A DEXA scan, which shows how strong the bones are.

What is Hadsankal?

A herb known in Ayurveda for bone joining; on a Vaidya’s advice.

In short: If a rib cracks from an ordinary fall, bone density, vitamin D and thyroid tests are needed. Rest, sunlight, calcium and protein-rich food and herbs such as Hadsankal on a Vaidya’s advice support stronger bones.
