Diabetes at 53 (Sugar 320), Also in the Family: Is Ayurvedic Treatment Possible?

Share with:

I am 53 and a teacher. I was getting thirsty often and passing urine often, so I suspected something and got my blood and urine tested. The report showed blood sugar of 320 and sugar in the urine as well. My father had diabetes, and my two brothers and one sister also have it.

I was told that diabetes medicine has to be taken for life, so I want to know about Ayurvedic treatment. Can diabetes be controlled with Ayurveda? What changes should I make in diet and lifestyle? Is it necessary to take modern medicine or not?

Hello

Have a Healthy Day !!

Welcome to the world of health from Ayurveda conducted by Dr. Nikul Patel.

Direct answer: A sugar of 320 is a high level, so a complete check-up and the necessary treatment from a doctor should start immediately. Ayurvedic treatment, diet and exercise become very useful support along with it, and in many people sugar control improves. Do not stop the doctor’s medicine on your own.

Understanding the problem

Frequent thirst, frequent urination and high sugar are symptoms of diabetes. With a family history the risk is higher. High sugar over a long time can affect the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and feet, so timely control is very important.

The Ayurvedic view

In Ayurveda diabetes is called Madhumeha (a type of Prameha). Charaka Samhita names a sedentary life, too much sleep, and excess of heavy, Kapha-increasing foods such as milk, curd, jaggery and sweets among its causes. When Kapha and Meda (fat) increase, the body’s channels get blocked, and then Vata also rises. Ayurveda considers hereditary (Sahaja) Madhumeha as needing more care.

Practical steps

  • HbA1c, kidney, lipid and eye tests with the doctor.
  • Regular sugar checks at home and keeping a record.
  • 45 minutes of brisk walking daily, at least 5 days a week.
  • If overweight, reduce weight gradually.
  • Check the feet daily; show any wound or blister immediately.

Diet

  • Barley, bajra, jowar, moong, bitter and astringent vegetables (bitter gourd, fenugreek, pointed gourd), green vegetables.
  • Less sweets, jaggery, sugar, refined flour, cold drinks, excess rice and potatoes.
  • A light dinner; no daytime sleep.

Medicine, yoga and Panchakarma

In Ayurveda, herbs such as Gudmar, Mamejvo, jamun seeds and turmeric-amla are considered useful in Prameha. The right medicine, dose and duration will be decided by the Vaidya after examining your condition. If you are taking the doctor’s medicine, sugar may fall further when Ayurvedic medicine is added, so take it only after informing both. Yoga: Surya Namaskar, Mandukasana, Ardha Matsyendrasana, Kapalabhati (with advice if there is BP or heart disease). After examination, the Vaidya may also suggest purification such as Virechana.

When to see a doctor immediately?

  • Sugar constantly above 300, or very low (dizziness, sweating, trembling)
  • Vomiting, abdominal pain, extreme tiredness, confusion
  • A foot wound that does not heal, tingling
  • Blurred vision, chest pain
