My question is about my wife’s irregular and prolonged periods, and her eggs not developing properly, because of which we are not having a child.
My wife and I have been married for six years, and I am 35 years old. For all these years we have been trying for a child, and medicines are also going on, but we have not succeeded yet. This long wait has left us both mentally exhausted.
The main difficulty is my wife’s periods. They do not come regularly; they come once every two or two and a half months. And when they come, they continue for fifteen to twenty days.
Under a gynaecologist’s supervision, we had her eggs checked by sonography for four cycles. It showed that sometimes an egg forms and sometimes it does not form at all. When it does form, it stays small or does not rupture.
In this situation we want to know:
– What could be the possible causes of periods being this irregular and prolonged?
– What effect does an egg staying small or not rupturing have on conceiving?
– Which tests should be done next?
– What treatment does Ayurveda have to regularize periods and improve egg development?
– Can Ayurveda be taken along with the ongoing treatment?
– What changes should be made in diet and lifestyle?
We still have hope, and we are ready to keep trying patiently in the right direction. Your advice will be very important to us.
Hello
Have a Healthy Day !!
Welcome to the world of health from Ayurveda conducted by Dr. Nikul Patel.
Direct answer: Periods every two to two and a half months, prolonged bleeding and irregular egg development mostly point towards an ovulation problem (such as PCOS or hormone imbalance). By continuing the gynaecologist’s treatment, fully investigating the cause, improving weight and lifestyle, and Ayurvedic Artava care, many couples find a way forward.
Understanding the problem
If ovulation does not happen regularly, periods come late, and as the lining of the uterus becomes thicker, bleeding can last longer. Bleeding for 15-20 days can lower haemoglobin, so that needs checking too. The husband’s semen report should also be reviewed together.
The Ayurvedic view
In Ayurveda, Ritu, Kshetra, Ambu and Beeja (right time, field, nourishment and seed) are needed for conception. Irregular periods are understood in the context of Artava Dushti (disturbed menstrual function), and prolonged bleeding in the context of Asrigdara. Obstruction by Vata and Kapha prevents the egg from forming properly, and when Pitta increases, bleeding increases. Treatment mainly involves improving Agni, Artava Shodhana (cleansing) and uterus-strengthening therapy.
Practical steps
- Hormone tests (thyroid, prolactin, AMH and others), sonography and haemoglobin, on the gynaecologist’s advice.
- Semen analysis for the husband.
- If weight is high, even a 5-10% reduction can improve ovulation.
- Walk 30-45 minutes daily, enough sleep, less stress.
- Do not stop the gynaecologist’s ongoing treatment on your own.
Diet
- Fresh, warm, low-oil food; barley, millet, moong, green vegetables, fruit.
- Less sugar, refined flour, fried food and cold drinks.
- With prolonged bleeding, iron-rich food: leafy greens, dates, jaggery in moderation.
Medicine and Panchakarma
In Ayurveda, substances such as Shatavari, Ashoka, Lodhra, Kanchanar and Dashamool are considered useful for balancing Artava. After the vaidya’s examination, therapies such as Virechana, Basti or Uttarbasti may be suggested. The right medicine, dose and timing will be decided by the vaidya after examining your condition. If taking it alongside the gynaecologist’s medicine, inform both.
When to see a doctor immediately?
- Very heavy bleeding, clots, dizziness or breathlessness
- Bleeding for more than three weeks
- Severe abdominal pain, fever
- If the wife is around 35 or older, quick planning with a fertility specialist
Related Questions
What happens if the egg does not rupture?
Without ovulation pregnancy does not happen; the doctor decides treatment according to the cause.
Why do periods last so long?
Hormone imbalance, a growth or a problem with the lining may be the cause; tests are needed.
Does losing weight improve ovulation?
If weight is high, even a small reduction improves ovulation in many women.
In short: Periods that come every two to two and a half months and last 15-20 days, with irregular egg development, suggest an ovulation problem. The gynaecologist’s treatment, hormone tests, the husband’s semen report, weight improvement and Ayurvedic Artava care are useful.
