Honey with lemon and warm water for constipation – right or wrong?

Respected Vaidya Nikulbhai, (1) I have constipation, and a homoeopathic doctor advised me to take two teaspoons of honey and the juice of one lemon in lukewarm water every morning. I started it and got some relief in about a month. But in one of your answers to another patient I read that honey should never be taken with lemon or hot water, so I am confused whether to continue or stop. I am 28; about 6 years ago I had piles removed by the Kshara-sutra method, so it is very important that I do not get constipated. (2) About a week ago, after eating a very spicy vegetable, I had a very pungent burp and my throat burned for about half an hour. Since that day I have had burning in the stomach. Could it be acidity? Since then I drink isabgol in cold milk every night, which gives some relief, but the burning starts again after meals, and I sometimes get sour burps during the day. Please guide me; I am ready to change my lifestyle.

Hello

Have a Healthy Day !!

Welcome to the world of health from Ayurveda conducted by Dr. Nikul Patel.

As per your problem, here are the answers to your questions.

1. The point that honey should not be taken with lemon in hot water was about a weight-loss remedy. According to Ayurveda, for weight loss only two teaspoons of honey in plain water is proper and beneficial. As per Ayurvedic texts, honey should never be heated, because then its constituents can become harmful instead of beneficial and act like a kind of poison (toxic substance). That may also be why it works for you like a laxative – in fact that is its side effect, not a real cure for constipation, and you may even develop loose motions in the future.

Secondly, taking lemon every day in this way – in my practice I have seen many people later suffer from stiff joints and arthritis. The long-term risks should certainly be considered.

So you should stop this remedy, and instead take Eranda-bhrishta haritaki (castor-oil-roasted haritaki) churna, or haritaki churna, or triphala with isabgol, in whatever quantity suits you.

2. What you describe can be called acidity; in Ayurvedic terms it is amlapitta. Isabgol and milk can give only temporary relief; for lasting relief proper treatment is better. If this problem continues for long, piles may also come back.

You can start the following medicines, and if you wish you can consult us by phone or email and get the medicines by courier:

  1. Amlapitta-har tablet 2 tablets twice a day
  2. Avipattikar tablet 2 tablets twice a day
  3. Praval panchamrut tablet 1 tablet twice a day
  4. Acitra syrup 3 teaspoons three times a day, shaken well

Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatment will also be beneficial:

  1. Virechana karma
  2. Basti karma
  3. Shirodhara

At such a time, stay away from negative thoughts and always think positively.

If you go for a walk every morning and practise yoga, pranayama and meditation, you will benefit faster.

Yogasanas:

  1. Paschimottanasana
  2. Chakrasana
  3. Pavanamuktasana
  4. Pranayama
