Pain and Dryness During Foreplay, and Fear of Getting Pregnant (Age 25)

I am 25 and got married a few months ago. When my husband and I come close, I feel vaginal dryness during foreplay itself, and even touch causes pain. Because of this I feel afraid to come close.

Another fear is that we do not want a child right now. I have heard that pregnancy can happen even from just kissing or coming close. Is this true? What could be the cause of the dryness and pain, and what should I do?

Namaste. It is good that you wrote openly about both worries. Both have a clear answer.

Direct answer: Pregnancy does not happen from kissing, hugging or coming close with clothes on. For pregnancy, sperm must reach the vagina. Dryness and pain are usually due to not enough arousal, fear, or sometimes infection, and they can be solved.

Correct understanding of pregnancy

  • Pregnancy does not happen from kissing, touching or hugging.
  • If ejaculation happens near or inside the vaginal opening, there is a small chance even without penetration.
  • If you do not want a child, use condoms or another contraceptive method on a doctor’s advice.

Causes of dryness and pain

  • Fear and anxiety: fear of pregnancy or of pain stops arousal, and moisture reduces.
  • Hurry: without enough time the body does not get ready.
  • Infection: itching, burning or foul-smelling discharge may mean a fungal or bacterial infection.
  • Soaps, scented washes: can dry the delicate vaginal skin.
  • Some medicines or hormone imbalance.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda links dryness with the Ruksha (dry) quality of Vata. Fear and staying up late increase Vata. In women, nourishment of Rasa Dhatu and Artava, along with a cheerful mind, is needed for natural moisture.

Practical steps

  • Decide on contraception first; when the fear goes, the body will also relax.
  • Give foreplay enough time without hurry; if there is pain, say so immediately.
  • A water-based lubricant can be used.
  • Plain water for the vaginal area; avoid scented soaps or washes.
  • Cotton, loose underwear.

Diet and lifestyle

  • Enough water, ghee in moderation, milk, sesame, dates; less very spicy and stale food.
  • Enough sleep, less stress.
  • Yoga: Baddha Konasana, Bhramari, Anulom-Vilom.

About herbs

A herb such as Shatavari is considered a Rasayana for women in Ayurveda and is supportive in dryness. If there is infection, it must be treated first. The dose and choice will be decided by the Vaidya after examination.

Counselling

Fear and pain increase each other. Talking with your husband, and couple counselling if needed, helps break this cycle.

Warning signs: when to see a doctor?

  • Itching, burning, foul smell or coloured discharge
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Pain that continues or increases
  • If a period is late, a pregnancy test

Whom to consult: a gynaecologist; a sexologist; an Ayurvedic Vaidya.

Example 1: A newly married woman in her twenties had dryness and pain during closeness because of fear of pregnancy. She got clarity about contraception, gave foreplay time and used a lubricant. As the fear reduced, the dryness also reduced.

Example 2: Another woman had pain along with itching and burning. Tests showed a fungal infection. After treatment and stopping scented washes, her symptoms improved.
