Namaste! I need advice for making my hair black. Is the hair dye available in the market harmful? If Ayurveda has harmless hair dye (kalap) preparations that can be made at home, please share them.

Hello

Have a Healthy Day !!

Welcome to the world of health from Ayurveda conducted by Dr. Nikul Patel.

Your question is about hair beauty, especially premature greying. Today problems such as hair fall, thinning, reduced volume, split ends, early baldness, premature greying, dry hair and hair turning like nylon wire after straightening have become common.

  • The main cause is lack of internal and external nourishment for the hair.
  • Eating junk food, stale food, refined flour and bakery items and nutrition-less market snacks means the hair does not get enough nourishment.
  • Today’s young generation does not like milk, fruits, dry fruits and green vegetables – so where will the hair get nourishment from?
  • Following fashion – keeping hair dry, not oiling, or using attractive but chemical-laden oils from advertisements – harms the hair.
  • Washing hair with harsh chemical shampoos and conditioners to make it look silky damages it.
  • Along with these, late nights, anger, tension and the stress of studies or job targets cause premature greying.
  • Market hair dyes are harmful, because hair cannot become black as fast as they make it without chemical dye. Today there is also a big market of so-called herbal packs mixed with some chemicals, which in the end only cause harm.

Ayurvedic texts – Charaka, Sushruta, Ashtanga Hridaya, Bhavaprakasha, Chakradatta and others – describe many hair-dye preparations. Two or three examples (classical; please do a patch test first and prefer preparing them under guidance):

  1. Iron powder, bhringraj, triphala and black clay (or hirakasi) kept in sugarcane juice for a month, then applied as a hair dye.
  2. Powder of haritaki, bibhitaki, amla, nilini leaves (indigo), iron powder and bhringraj, ground well and applied as a paste on the hair.
  3. Old iron powder (rust), amla and hibiscus flowers combined and applied on the hair at night.

Use this regularly once or twice a week for at least six months, and more regularly if needed.

If you do not want this trouble, a ready hair pack is available from us, which you can soak in sour buttermilk and use once or twice a week. On the day you apply the pack, do not use shampoo; apply black hair oil, and wash the hair the next day with an Ayurvedic shampoo. Use the black hair oil regularly on alternate days.
