What Is the Importance of Foreplay, and Does It Help with Premature Ejaculation?

My question is about foreplay, and my problem of premature ejaculation is also connected with it.

Many people and articles say that foreplay is very necessary before intercourse. But to be honest, I do not understand why it is so important, and what exactly should be done in it. I also sometimes have premature ejaculation. So I am confused: if I do longer foreplay, my arousal will rise and ejaculation will happen even sooner. Out of this fear I sometimes cut foreplay short and begin intercourse directly.

I also feel that because of this my wife does not get full satisfaction, but I hesitate to talk openly with her about it.

I want to understand these things:
– Why is foreplay really necessary, especially for a woman?
– Does longer foreplay help or harm premature ejaculation?
– How long should foreplay be, is there any rule?
– Which methods help to control premature ejaculation?
– How should I talk to my wife about this?
– What do the Kamasutra and Ayurveda say about this?

I want our intimate life to be enjoyable and satisfying for both of us, and I do not want my worry to become an obstacle. Practical guidance from you will help me move forward with confidence.

Namaste. The right understanding of foreplay can make a big difference to a couple’s satisfaction.

Direct answer: Foreplay means closeness such as conversation, touch, embrace and kissing, which prepares both partners, especially the woman, physically and mentally. It brings natural lubrication in the woman, reduces pain and increases satisfaction. Foreplay is useful even for a man with premature ejaculation, because the wife’s arousal and pleasure do not depend only on the duration of penetration. It has no fixed “time”; it lasts until both feel ready.

Understanding the problem

  • In women, arousal generally comes slowly, and without enough preparation intercourse can be uncomfortable or painful.
  • In premature ejaculation, anxiety and hurry often play a large part; calm, slow foreplay relaxes the mind.
  • If the man learns to recognise his level of arousal during foreplay, it helps with control.

The Ayurvedic view

Vatsyayana’s Kamasutra considers Alingana (embrace), Chumbana (kissing) and loving touch an important part of union, and says that the Vega (pace of arousal) of a woman and a man can differ. According to Ayurveda, Apana Vata controls ejaculation, and anxiety increases Vata and speeds up ejaculation.

Practical steps

  • No hurry; begin with conversation and touch.
  • Ask your partner what she likes, and listen.
  • For premature ejaculation, a behavioural method such as “stop-start” on a specialist’s advice.
  • Do not link satisfaction only with the duration of penetration.
  • If there is dryness, a water-based lubricant.

Diet and lifestyle

  • Enough sleep, less stress, less alcohol.
  • Yoga: Mula Bandha, Ashwini Mudra, Anulom-Vilom, Bhramari.
  • Abhyanga (oil massage) for each other: increases closeness and calms Vata.

About herbs

For premature ejaculation, substances such as Ashwagandha, Brahmi and Jatiphala (nutmeg, in small amounts) are considered supportive in Ayurveda. The vaidya will decide the choice and amount after examination. Do not use advertised sprays or pills on your own.

Warning signs: when to see a specialist?

  • Ejaculation before or right after penetration almost every time
  • Constant pain for the wife during intercourse
  • Along with erection difficulty
  • Avoiding intimacy because of anxiety

Whom to consult: Sexologist, couple counsellor.

Example 1: A man in his thirties was frustrated by premature ejaculation and skipped foreplay, going straight to intercourse. After counselling he began slowly and paid attention to his wife’s pleasure; satisfaction for both increased and his anxiety reduced.

Example 2: In another couple, the wife felt pain. After giving time to foreplay, the pain reduced and her desire also increased.
