Tubes Open in HSG, Ovulation Medicine Prescribed: Should I Take It?

Namaste doctor. I have two reports. The first is an HSG (tube test); according to the report both fallopian tubes are open, but some fluid was seen in the right tube, so the doctor gave an antibiotic for a week; after that everything is normal. The second report mentions an infertility problem, and a medicine for ovulation has been prescribed.

Before periods I sometimes have mild pain in the abdomen and back. There is white discharge before and after periods. After intercourse some semen comes out, and sometimes there is mild burning. When we were not planning a child, we used only condoms. Please tell me, after seeing the reports, whether I should take this medicine or not.

Namaste. You described your reports and symptoms in detail, which helps a lot in understanding the treatment.

Direct answer: Your gynaecologist prescribed the ovulation medicine after examination, so it should be taken or stopped only according to their advice and supervision. Do not decide to stop it on your own. Ayurvedic treatment can be taken alongside as support.

Simple meaning of your reports

  • Open tubes are a good sign; there is a path for sperm and egg to meet.
  • Fluid in a tube can sometimes be a sign of infection or inflammation; that is why an antibiotic was given. If it is normal on re-examination after treatment, that is good.
  • Ovulation medicine is usually given to help ovulation (egg release). While taking it, the gynaecologist usually does a follicle study (sonography) to know when the egg is ready.

About your symptoms

  • Mild pain before periods and some white discharge around periods are normal in many women.
  • But if the discharge has a foul smell, is yellow-green, or there is itching or repeated burning, tests for infection are needed.
  • Some semen coming out after intercourse is normal; sperm move ahead within a few minutes.
  • If your husband’s semen analysis has not been done, it must be done; infertility tests should always be for both.

Supportive Ayurvedic view

In Ayurveda four things are needed for conception: Ritu (right time), Kshetra (healthy uterus and tubes), Ambu (nourishment) and Beeja (Shukra-Artava). Inflammation in the tube or repeated discharge is seen as a Kapha-Vata disturbance, and attention is given to cleansing and nourishing the uterus. Herbs such as Shatavari, Ashoka and Lodhra and treatments such as Uttarbasti can be useful; but the right medicine, dose and duration will be decided by the Vaidya after examining your condition, and while the ovulation medicine is ongoing, take them only after informing your gynaecologist.

Diet and lifestyle

  • Fresh, nourishing food; milk, ghee, fruit, green vegetables
  • Less outside fried, very sour and fermented food
  • Keep weight normal, enough sleep and less stress
  • Yoga: Baddha Konasana, Bhujangasana, Anulom-Vilom, Bhramari

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Severe pain in the lower abdomen, fever
  • Foul-smelling or coloured discharge, constant burning
  • Blurred vision, abdominal bloating or heavy pain while taking the ovulation medicine
  • If periods stop and a pregnancy test is positive, get checked immediately (to make sure the pregnancy is not in the tube)

Example 1: A woman in her twenties had open tubes and was on ovulation medicine. Along with the gynaecologist’s treatment, improvement in diet and lifestyle and her husband’s tests gave them a clear way forward.

Example 2: Another woman had repeated white discharge and burning; after treatment for infection her symptoms improved, and further fertility treatment became easier.

Related Questions

Can Ayurvedic medicine be taken with ovulation medicine?

Yes, often as support, but only after informing both doctors and at the right time.

If the tubes are open in HSG, is pregnancy easy?

Open tubes are a good sign, but tests of ovulation, the uterus and the husband’s semen are just as important.

When is white discharge a concern?

If it comes with a foul smell, yellow-green colour, itching or burning, get tested for infection.

In short: If a gynaecologist has prescribed ovulation medicine, take it only under their supervision. Open tubes in HSG are a good sign. The husband’s semen analysis is also needed; Ayurvedic treatment can be taken as support.
