Because of the Betel Nut Habit, My Mouth Opens Only Two Fingers Wide

Share with:

My question is about the habit of chewing betel nut (supari) and my mouth opening less. I have had the habit of eating betel nut for five to seven years; I have no other addiction.

Earlier my mouth used to open four fingers wide. But now it opens only two fingers wide. Seeing this change has worried me, because the mouth opening less can affect daily activities.

I have heard that betel nut can make the inner lining of the mouth stiff, and that it can also become a serious problem. Hearing this scares me. I want to know how serious my condition is, and whether improvement is possible.

I am thinking of giving up the betel nut habit, but since it is a habit of years, it does not seem easy.

My questions are:
– What causes the mouth to open less because of betel nut?
– How serious is this condition, and what are the risks ahead?
– Can the mouth open again as before?
– Is any mouth-opening exercise useful?
– What remedy does Ayurveda have for this?
– What can help in giving up the betel nut habit?
– Which tests should I get, and which doctor should I see?

I want to take the right step in time so that the condition does not get worse. Clear guidance from you will help me start the right tests and treatment.

Hello

Have a Healthy Day !!

Welcome to the world of health from Ayurveda conducted by Dr. Nikul Patel.

Direct answer: The mouth opening less after a long betel nut habit can be a sign of a serious condition called oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), in which the inner lining of the mouth keeps getting harder. This condition increases the risk of mouth cancer later, so an examination by an oral disease specialist (oral surgeon or ENT) is essential. The first and most important step: stop betel nut completely.

Understanding the problem

Substances in betel nut gradually form fibres (fibrosis) in the soft lining inside the mouth. At first there is burning when eating spicy food, blisters in the mouth, white areas, and later the mouth opening less. Early examination and treatment can stop it from progressing, and in many people mouth opening improves.

The Ayurvedic view

According to Ayurveda, betel nut has Ruksha (dry) and Kashaya (astringent) qualities, which in excess increase Vata and Pitta and make the lining of the mouth hard. Ayurveda describes Gandusha and Kavala (holding or swishing medicated substances in the mouth) for mouth diseases, which can be supportive along with a specialist’s treatment.

Practical steps

  • From today, stop betel nut, gutkha, tobacco and pan masala completely; get de-addiction help if needed.
  • Examination by an oral surgeon or ENT; a biopsy if needed.
  • Mouth-opening exercises as the doctor advises (for example with a spoon or wooden strips); not by forcing on your own.
  • Regular follow-up through the year.

Diet

  • Less spicy, very hot and highly seasoned food.
  • Amla, green vegetables, fruit; enough water.

Medicine

In Ayurveda, substances such as turmeric, Triphala, Yashtimadhu and Irimedadi Taila are considered useful for oral health as Gandusha-Kavala. This is not a substitute for a specialist’s examination and treatment. The right medicine, dose and timing will be decided by the vaidya after examining your condition.

When to see a doctor immediately?

  • A non-healing ulcer in the mouth (more than two weeks)
  • White or red patches, a lump
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Bleeding from the mouth, weight loss

Related Questions

Can betel nut alone cause harm?

Yes, betel nut even without tobacco can make the lining of the mouth hard.

Can OSMF be cured?

In the early stage, stopping betel nut and treatment bring improvement; in later stages specialist treatment is needed.

Can mouth-opening exercises be done at home?

As per the doctor’s advice, slowly and regularly; not by force.

In short: If the mouth opens less after a betel nut habit, it may be oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), which increases the risk of cancer. Stopping betel nut completely, an oral surgeon or ENT examination and exercises as the doctor advises are necessary.

You can consult for further guidance after your examination.
