Sinus and Allergy From Dust and Smoke, Nose Already Operated: Is There Panchakarma for the Nose?

Share with:

I work in the mounted police, so I am always in dust and soil. I have a severe allergy to dust, smoke, perfume, cold water and cold air. Exposure to any one of them immediately blocks my nose and yellow phlegm comes out. My head feels heavy, there is burning in the nose while breathing, pain in the eyes and a dry throat.

Two years ago I had surgery for a deviated nasal bone, but the trouble is still a lot. I have to get Panchakarma done for my stomach; can Panchakarma also be done for the nose? What remedy should I follow?

Hello

Have a Healthy Day !!

Welcome to the world of health from Ayurveda conducted by Dr. Nikul Patel.

Direct answer: Staying constantly in dust and smoke makes allergy and sinus trouble flare up repeatedly. Yes, Ayurveda has a Panchakarma for the nose called Nasya, which is considered very useful in nose and sinus problems. After surgery, Nasya should be done only after a Vaidya’s examination.

Understanding the problem

In allergic rhinitis the nose over-reacts to things like dust. If the nose stays blocked for long, mucus collects in the sinuses and infection occurs, causing yellow phlegm, a heavy head and pain near the eyes. Surgery opens the nasal passage, but it does not change the allergic nature.

The Ayurvedic view

In Ayurveda this is explained under Pratishyaya (repeated colds) and Peenasa (chronic sinus trouble). Kapha and Vata are the main doshas, and in chronic cases Pitta too (yellow phlegm, burning). Weak Vyadhikshamatva (immunity) causes repeated flare-ups. Charaka Samhita says “Nasa hi shiraso dwaram”, the nose is the gateway to the head, and Nasya is its main treatment.

Practical steps

  • A mask or cloth covering the nose and mouth on duty.
  • After duty, cleanse the nose with lukewarm salt water (Jala Neti, after learning it properly).
  • Steam inhalation once or twice a day.
  • Avoid cold water, cold drinks and ice cream.
  • Anulom-Vilom and Bhramari every morning.

Diet

  • Warm, light food; ginger, turmeric, tulsi, black pepper.
  • Less curd (at night), bananas, cold, fried food and sweets.

Medicine and Panchakarma

In Ayurveda, herbs such as turmeric, tulsi, Trikatu, Sitopaladi, Lakshmivilas Rasa and Chitrak Haritaki are considered useful in Pratishyaya; Anu Taila is well known for Nasya. The right medicine, dose and duration will be decided by the Vaidya after examining your condition. Nasya can also be added to the programme along with Panchakarma for the stomach (Virechana); the Vaidya will decide the order.

When to see a doctor immediately?

  • Swelling around the eyes, blurred vision
  • Severe headache, fever
  • Breathlessness, whistling sound in the chest
  • Repeated nosebleeds

Related Questions

Can Nasya be done at home?

Daily Pratimarsha Nasya (1-2 drops) on a Vaidya’s advice; medicated Nasya at the clinic.

Is Jala Neti safe?

Done properly with boiled and cooled water, it is usually safe.

Why does sinus trouble remain even after surgery?

Surgery opens the passage, but the allergy and Kapha nature may remain.

In short: Allergy and sinus trouble flare up repeatedly from dust and smoke. In Ayurveda, Nasya Panchakarma is useful for the nose and can be combined with Panchakarma for the stomach. A mask, Jala Neti, steam, warm food and pranayama give support.
