Three Months of Marriage, Tightness and Pain During Intercourse

We have been married for three months. Intercourse happens, but every time at the start I feel a lot of tightness and pain. Sometimes there is burning afterwards too. My husband is very understanding, but now I start feeling afraid even before coming close.

Relatives say, “You’ll get used to it in a few days.” Is that true? Is it safe to use a lubricant? How should I talk to my husband about this?

Namaste. You did very well to ask about this instead of hiding it. This is very common in a new marriage, and there is a remedy.

Direct answer: Constant pain during intercourse is not something to bear thinking “you’ll get used to it”. Usually the cause is hurry, not enough arousal, dryness and muscle tightness from fear. Foreplay, a water-based lubricant, open conversation with your husband and a gynaecological check when needed usually bring improvement.

Understanding the problem

Fear of pain tightens the muscles more, and tightness gives more pain. This becomes a cycle. Burning after intercourse can be due to friction, dryness or sometimes infection (such as a urinary infection, which is seen more in new marriages).

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda links fear and tightness with the qualities of Vata, and dryness is a sign of Vata’s Ruksha quality. The Kamasutra also stresses not hurrying in a new marriage and winning the wife’s trust slowly.

Psychological understanding

“Feeling afraid” is not a failure of the relationship, but a signal from the body. Communication and patience reduce this fear.

How to talk to your husband?

  • At a calm time say: “I love coming close to you, but the pain makes me afraid. Can we go a little slower?”
  • Tell him naturally what feels comfortable and what does not.
  • You have the right to say “stop” immediately if there is pain.

Practical steps

  • Enough time for foreplay, conversation and touch.
  • A water-based lubricant is safe and can be used without hesitation.
  • For a few days, only closeness without penetration; this reduces fear.
  • Urinate after intercourse, drink enough water.
  • Avoid scented soaps or washes; cotton underwear.

Diet and lifestyle

  • Ghee in moderation, milk, sesame, dates; enough water.
  • Yoga: Baddha Konasana, Shavasana, Bhramari, deep breathing (to relax the pelvic muscles).
  • Light Abhyanga, bathing with warm water.

About herbs

In dryness a herb such as Shatavari is considered supportive; if there is infection, treat it first. The dose and choice will be decided by the Vaidya after examination.

Counselling

If despite patience and these steps there is strong tightness every time, it may be vaginismus. Its treatment is possible with gradual exercises, counselling and the husband’s support.

Warning signs: when to see a doctor?

  • Pain every time and increasing
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Burning on urination, frequent urination, fever
  • Foul-smelling discharge, itching

Whom to consult: a gynaecologist; a sexologist; an Ayurvedic Vaidya.

Example 1: After a new marriage, a young woman had pain at the start every time. Conversation revealed that foreplay was little and fear was high. With open conversation with her husband, more time and a lubricant, the pain reduced a lot within a few weeks.

Example 2: Another woman had burning and frequent urination after intercourse. Tests found a urinary infection. With treatment, enough water and the habit of urinating after intercourse, her symptoms improved.
