Erection Goes Soft During Intercourse: What Should I Do?

I am 32 and have been married for five years. At first the erection is good, but during intercourse it sometimes suddenly goes soft. This happens more when the thought comes, “What if it happens again this time?” I do sometimes have morning erections.

My job is very stressful; I sleep little and I don’t exercise. My wife doesn’t say anything, but I feel ashamed and have now started avoiding intimacy. Is this the beginning of impotence? What changes should I make in understanding with my wife and in my routine? What remedies does Ayurveda have?

Namaste. You described the problem in detail, which helps a lot. This difficulty is seen in many men, and it can mostly be improved.

Direct answer: If morning erections happen and the problem occurs more at times of anxiety or stress, the mind, stress and lifestyle usually play a big part. It is not right to call it “impotence”. Still, tests such as sugar and BP are necessary.

Understanding the problem

To maintain an erection, good blood flow, healthy nerves and a calm mind are all needed. The fear “what if it happens again?” raises the stress hormone in the body, which narrows blood vessels, and the erection softens. Then this experience strengthens the fear even more. This is called the cycle of performance anxiety. Little sleep, a sedentary life and stress strengthen this cycle further.

Such symptoms are usually seen in a mild to moderate problem; tests are needed to know the exact cause.

The Ayurvedic view

In Ayurveda, erection difficulty is explained under the subject of Klaibya. Worry, fear and staying up late increase Vata, which makes the mind unstable and weakens Shukra and Ojas. Charaka Samhita also describes Klaibya from mental causes, and suggests calming the mind, nourishment and Vajikarana (therapy that nourishes sexual vitality) in treatment.

Psychological understanding

Avoiding intimacy saves you from shame for a while, but the fear becomes stronger. Shifting attention from “performance” to touch, pleasure and connection with your wife is a big part of the treatment.

Practical steps

  • Talk to your wife at a calm time; often the wife understands and supports.
  • For a few weeks, don’t make penetration the goal; only touch, hugs and closeness (sensate focus exercise, on an expert’s advice).
  • No hurry; come close not when tired or late at night, but at a time of rest.
  • Stop alcohol, smoking and tobacco.

Diet and lifestyle

  • 7-8 hours of sleep, going to bed on time.
  • 30 minutes of brisk walking or exercise daily; weight control.
  • Milk, ghee in moderation, almonds, dates, fresh fruits, green vegetables; less junk food.
  • Yoga: Mula Bandha, pelvic floor exercises, Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Anulom-Vilom, Bhramari.

Herbs and Panchakarma

Herbs such as Ashwagandha (stress and strength), Kaunch Beej, Gokshura (Vajikara) and Brahmi (mind) are considered useful in Ayurveda. If Vata is high, the Vaidya may also suggest treatments such as Abhyanga and Basti. The dose and choice will be decided by the Vaidya after examination. If needed, a doctor may also consider modern medicine; do not take advertised “strength pills” on your own.

How long for improvement? In difficulties based on anxiety and lifestyle, many people see improvement within a few weeks to a few months; the time differs for every person.

Counselling

Sex therapy and couple counselling are very effective in performance anxiety. Bringing your wife along makes treatment easier.

Warning signs: see a doctor immediately

  • Morning erections also absent for a long time
  • History of diabetes, BP, heart disease or smoking
  • Chest pain or breathlessness with erection
  • Curvature, lump or pain in the penis
  • Desire greatly reduced, along with fatigue and sadness

Whom to consult: a sexologist; a physician or urologist if needed; an Ayurvedic Vaidya.

Example 1: A man in his thirties had his erection going soft during intercourse, while morning erections were normal. Tests were normal. He regularised sleep and exercise, practised sensate focus, and began Ashwagandha-based care under a Vaidya’s supervision. Within a few months the fear reduced and confidence returned.

Example 2: Another man had the same difficulty, but tests showed raised sugar, which he did not know about. With diabetes treatment and lifestyle improvement, his difficulty also improved. This shows why tests are necessary.
