Hello

Have a Healthy Day !!

Welcome to the world of health from Ayurveda conducted by Dr. Nikul Patel.

You have asked how the bitter taste can be useful and what its benefits are.

In everyday life, nobody likes a bitter taste. Ayurveda too says the bitter taste is disliked by everyone – it is aruchikara. Yet we always insist on giving children bitter decoctions, and we understand that sick people must take bitter medicines.

But Ayurveda says every healthy person should take all six tastes – pungent, sour, salty, bitter, sweet and astringent – to stay healthy.

Every healthy person can take bitter substances. The bitter taste is especially beneficial for people of Pitta constitution and in Kapha-Pitta diseases, diabetes, fever, worms, blood impurities, acidity and burning. Taken in autumn and summer, it reduces heat in the blood, helps in Kapha, improves digestion and keeps the body active.

The bitter taste should not be taken in excess, because one of its qualities is to make the body lean (reduce weight); it also reduces sexual strength and sleep.

Among bitter herbs, Guduchi (giloy) is an exception – although bitter, it is nourishing, so it is called katu-paushtik (bitter yet nourishing). It is generally safe in proper doses, so if you want to take a bitter substance regularly, remember Guduchi – but consult a doctor if you have diabetes medicines or an autoimmune condition.
